WooCommerce – How to Add Products? (Step by Step)

In this post, you will learn EVERYTHING you need to know about WooCommerce.

WooCommerce – step by step

1) Open the Product editor

In your WordPress dashboard, go to Products → Add New.
Start with the basics:

  • Product name (clear, descriptive)
  • Product description (the main content area—great for benefits, specs, FAQs)

Tip: Write for humans first, but include the key phrases customers search for (e.g., “leather wallet”, “A4 art print”, “protein shaker”).

2) Choose the right product type

Scroll down to the Product data box. The most common types are:

  • Simple product – one item, no variations (e.g., a book)
  • Variable product – variations like size/color
  • Grouped product – a collection of related items
  • External/Affiliate product – links to another site

For most stores, you’ll use Simple or Variable.

3) Set pricing

Under General, add:

  • Regular price
  • Sale price (optional, with scheduled dates if needed)

If you sell digital items, check Virtual (no shipping) and/or Downloadable (file delivery).

4) Add inventory (recommended)

Go to Inventory:

  • Enable SKU (helps with organization and integrations)
  • Choose whether to Manage stock
  • Set Stock quantity and Low stock threshold

If you offer limited stock, enabling stock management prevents overselling.

5) Configure shipping

For physical products, open Shipping:

  • Weight and dimensions (important for shipping rates)
  • Shipping class (optional: e.g., “bulky items”)

Make sure your WooCommerce → Settings → Shipping zones and methods are configured, otherwise customers may see no shipping options.

6) Add product images and gallery

On the right side:

  • Product image (main image—use a clean, high-quality photo)
  • Product gallery (additional angles, details, packaging, lifestyle shots)

Pro tip: Consistent image sizes make your shop look more professional. Also compress images for speed.

7) Organize with categories and tags

Categories help customers browse (and help SEO). Tags are optional but useful for filtering:

  • Categories: broad grouping (e.g., “Hoodies”)
  • Tags: attributes or themes (e.g., “organic”, “gift”, “summer”)

8) Use attributes and variations (for Variable products)

If your product comes in sizes or colors:

  1. Switch to Variable product
  2. Add Attributes (e.g., Size: S/M/L)
  3. Check Used for variations
  4. Go to Variations and generate variations
  5. Set price, stock, and image per variation if needed

9) Publish (or schedule)

Preview your product page, double-check price, images, and shipping, then click Publish. If you’re preparing a launch, you can schedule the product by setting the publish date.
